Focus areas

The Caribbean islands face major challenges and unique opportunities. Future Islands focuses on themes where collaboration and knowledge sharing can make a direct difference — where sustainable development is not only necessary but also creates new opportunities for local economies, jobs, and innovation. Our focus is on sustainable aviation and sustainable building, complemented by circular economy and education & collaboration — four themes that strengthen each other and together contribute to a future in which the islands are resilient, climate-proof, and self-sufficient.

Sustainable Aviation

The Caribbean islands are heavily dependent on air connections — for the economy, tourism, and family bonds. At the same time, aviation is a sector where innovation is urgently needed to reduce emissions and renew knowledge. Future Islands collaborates with local and Dutch partners on projects that train young people in sustainable aviation technology, electric flying, and maintenance. We support the exchange of knowledge between educational institutions, aviation authorities, and companies, thereby strengthening the foundation for a modern, safe, and sustainable aviation sector in the region.

Projects take place partly in Curaçao and Bonaire, in collaboration with Deltion College, Fundashon Mariadal, SBO Nilda Pinto, and the University of Curaçao.

Sustainable Built Environment

Pressure on the housing market in the Caribbean region is high, while traditional building materials are often scarce and expensive. Sustainable and bio-based building offers solutions: it reduces dependence on imports, lowers environmental impact, and stimulates local production. Future Islands encourages the use of circular and climate-resilient construction methods that are suited to the tropical climate and local reality. We keep the dialogue alive between public and private parties, policy, education, and practice about the future of sustainable building in the Caribbean region.

In addition, Future Islands coordinates the Caribbean delegation each year to the Built Environment Climate Summit, where sustainable building, local innovation, and knowledge sharing are central.

Education & Collaboration

Sustainable change begins with knowledge. Future Islands invests in education, training, and knowledge sharing so that young people, professionals, and policymakers are better prepared for the islands’ sustainable future. We organize webinars, inspirational trips, workshops, and roundtable discussions where local and Dutch experts meet. By connecting education and practice, a network of people working together on sustainable development — on and between the islands — is created.
