In case you missed it, the 13th of June this year was a milestone day for the island of Bonaire. On that day, Bonaire’s first official business incubator opened its doors at Kaya Betico Croes 1, in the center of Kralendijk. The incubator, which was officially announced at the end of March of this year by the Public Entity Bonaire, is called BusinesSpark and will start out with six local start-ups. The inauguration of the new business center was graced with a speech by Commissioner Hennyson Thielman of the Public Entity Bonaire (Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire), who expressed his delight with the fact that the incubator project is ready to start after much planning and preparation.

Aimed at local entrepreneurs and small businesses

The BusinesSpark incubator is aimed at local entrepreneurs and small businesses by focusing on a more self-sufficient and diverse local economy. Starting entrepreneurs are free to use the facilities to get together, get inspired and get creative. That’s also where the name of the incubator comes from. “The name we gave to the business incubator is “BusinesSpark”, explains Commissioner Thielman, “The name refers to the “spark”, the literal spark we hope will encourage more and better entrepreneurship. I’m convinced that this facility can provide the spark needed to create new activities and speed up economic development”.

The goal is to provide support to local small companies and independent entrepreneurs, and to stimulate them to improve and diversify the products and services they are selling. This should not only lead to more innovation and a more diversified local economy, but also to more local entrepreneurship overall. BusinesSpark therefore also offers coaching, training and networking programs. “With this business incubator BusinesSpark initiative in Bonaire, we want to position Bonaire as a society that encourages entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity”, says Commissioner Thielman.

Innovation, sustainability, and economic diversity at the core

The BusinesSpark incubator is open to anyone who sees innovation, sustainability, and diversity not only as important economic factors, but as the backbone for their own economic and commercial activities as well. In order to get a spot at the incubator, interested parties need to present at least a basic business plan with regard to the product or service they are offering. The Public Entity Bonaire will be raising awareness for the project and its opportunities for local entrepreneurs through local ads and online marketing over the coming weeks and months. They are also taking care of the rental costs of the BusinesSpark center at the Kaya Betico Croes.

More information about Bonaire’s first business incubator will be published over the coming weeks and months. Entrepreneurs who are interested in the project and who would like some more information can get directly in touch with BusinesSpark here.
